Seeing that Samund Singh was an Acting Ser-
geant I refused to re-enlist him because his name was on the
Wa Lane List.
He was a 15 years man and not entitled to pen-
sion but as he had served over 10 years he would be in the
same category as A.S.Macaulay & Mc. Iver to whom the Secreta-
ry of State has granted special pensions.
A. $.689 was present with the other Indian
Constables who were identified as reported in C.S.0.2302 of
1897, but was not identified.
I happened to learn that the man Mak Cheung
who identified 15 Indian Police on the previous occasions, and
who was at Capsuimoon in Customs employ had paid money to 689
when 689 was a Constable.
So I sent for Mak Cheung and had 689 called
up here at the same time and placed with 5 other Indians in
plain clothes.
Mak Cheung at once identified him.
I then took the statement of which I enclose
a copy from Mak Cheung after shewing 689 the entry in the
Wa Lane books referring to him.
It is of course a weak point that Mak Cheung
did
